Event Detail : With over 11,500 community pharmacies across England and approximately 438m visits annually, pharmacy is the third largest health profession within the NHS. Being an integral feature of the healthcare sector, community pharmacies are a gateway to health for 1.6m patients each day playing an expanding role in improving public health and reducing health inequalities. Recent evidence illustrates that common ailments (eg. coughs, sore throats) cost the NHS an extra £1.1b a year, when patients are treated to Emergency Departments or GPs rather than at community pharmacies (‘Community Pharmacy Management of Minor Illness’, Pharmacy Research UK – January 2014). This timely symposium provides an invaluable opportunity for key stakeholders to examine how pharmacies can deliver improved, cost-effective outcomes in primary care services.
